The T&G Hometeam boys’ skiing all-stars for winter 2022-23

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, with the Central Mass High School Sports Awards program, presented by DCU – Digital Federal Credit Union, is proud to announce the nominees for boys’ skiing. The winner will be announced during the live show Wednesday, June 28, at the Hanover Theatre.

During the live show, these nominees will be honored, along with the athletes of the year in 31 other sports with Athletes of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, and a Courage Award.

Bagley, a senior at North Middlesex Regional, earned his third T&G Super Team honor after leading Bromfield to the Mass Bay West Alpha Division championship. The achievement was the most memorable moment of the season for Bagley, who had many. Bagley registered three first-place finishes while finishing first individually in the Mass Bay West Alpha Division. At the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East, he finished 10th in the grand slalom. Bagley was a co-captain and league all-star. He is undecided on his college choice, but plans to study business/marketing and ski competitively. He is the son of Alison and Keith Bagley of Pepperell.

Chiarelli, an assistant captain, posted three top-5 finishes, nine top-10 finishes, and was eighth in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League individual rankings. Westborough finished third as a team. At the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East, Chiarelli was 61st in the slalom and 72nd in the giant slalom. His most memorable moment of the season was the Rangers’ first slalom race of the year. He and three teammates had their best races of the season, and Westborough finished second, its best showing in Chiarelli’s three years on the team. He is the son of Katie and Matt Chiarelli of Westborough.

St. John’s, Junior

Cotter repeated as a T&G Super Team selection after finishing in the top 10 (ninth) in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League individual rankings for the second straight year. The past two seasons, Cotter was a top-three skier for the Pioneers, who finished atop the Central Mass. Conference this year after going 45-0 in the regular season. His most memorable moment of the season was competing at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. Cotter was sick, and almost missed the event. He toughed it out and finished 58th in the slalom and 62nd in the giant slalom. He hoped for better results, but was excited to overcome sickness and race alongside his teammates. Cotter has represented the tri-state team (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Eastern Finals. He is the son of Sherri and Rob Cotter of Boylston.

St. John’s, Senior

With a 20th-place performance in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East, Cronin was St. John’s top finisher. The Pioneers finished seventh in the team standings, and the event was Cronin’s most memorable moment of the season because of the way the team came together and pushed each other. St. John’s finished atop the Central Mass. Conference Ski League rankings after going 45-0 in the regular season. Cronin was a team captain. In the fall, he will attend Providence College, where he will study business management. He is the son of Lisa and Sean Cronin of Southborough.

Algonquin Regional, Senior

Desio earned his third straight T&G Super Team honor after finishing second individually in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League and a career-best 12th in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. Desio, a captain, finished in the top 10 in every race during the regular season. He earned his first high school win in his second race after coming from .20 seconds behind after his first run, which was his most memorable moment of the season. In the fall, Desio will attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where he will study aeronautical science. He looks forward to a career as a pilot flying for a major airline. He is the son of Liana and Stephen Desio of Northborough.

Nashoba Regional, Senior

Fish earned his third straight Super Team selection after finishing 15th in the slalom race at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. Fish was 13th in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom last season. Fish, who was a team captain, is also a two-year captain of the Wolves’ golf team. He plans to study engineering in college. He is the son of Jessica and Christopher Fish of Lancaster.

Gavala repeated as a T&G Super Team selection after finishing 26th in the giant slalom and 34th in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. The Pioneers finished seventh. Gavala, who helped St. John’s to a runner-up finish at last year’s state meet, was fourth individually in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League. He won two races to help St. John’s to a 45-0 mark in the regular season. He is the son of Cristina and Artic Gavala of Sutton.

Ghidella repeated as a T&G Super Team honoree after finishing 19th in the slalom and 41st in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. Ghidella finished third individually in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League and helped Shrewsbury to fourth in the team point standings. Ghidella was a captain, and his team’s MVP for the second straight year. Skiing on Senior Night was his most memorable moment of the season. He is undecided on his college plans but hopes to study engineering. He is the son of Jenny Brown and Jason Ghidella of Shrewsbury.

Joyce earned his second T&G Super Team honor after posting two top-25 finishes at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. Joyce was 19th in the giant slalom and 24th in the slalom. His overall finish was the best in program history. Joyce ranked fifth individually in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League. He was a team captain. Making friends with skiers on other teams was his most memorable moment of the season. In the fall, he will attend UMass-Boston, where he will study engineering physics. He is the son of Erin and Stephen Joyce of Upton.

Pride earned his second straight T&G Super Team accolade after finishing eighth individually in the Mass Bay West Alpha Division. Pride was sixth last season. At the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East, he was 41st in the slalom and 82nd in the giant slalom. Pride was a team captain and he earned league all-star honors. Having to deal with a lack of snow, on and off the courses, was his most memorable moment of the season. He hopes his future career will take him to places where he can enjoy skiing, surfing and mountain biking. He is the son of Charlotte and Ethan Pride of Harvard.

St. John’s, Junior

Robinson repeated as a T&G Super Team honoree after finishing seventh individually in the Central Mass. Conference Ski League and helping the Pioneers to an undefeated regular season. Robinson had a third-place finish in a Central Mass. Conference slalom race, and he was 32nd in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East. He helped St. John’s to a seventh-place finish. His final slalom race of the season and Senior Night were his most memorable moments of the year. Robinson is a two-time T&G Super Team selection in cross-country. He hopes to compete in college athletics. He is the son of Susie and Dave Robinson of Princeton.

Declan Varnerin

Nashoba Regional, Senior

Varnerin capped his outstanding career with his fourth T&G Super Team selection. He was No. 1 in the Mass Bay West Omega Ski League, and turned in several fine performances in the postseason. At the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East, Varnerin was 10th in the slalom and 11th in the giant slalom. At the Eastern High School Championships, he was sixth in the slalom (second among Massachusetts competitors) and 31st in the giant slalom (also second among Massachusetts participants). The event was his most memorable moment of the season. Varnerin was a team captain. In the fall, he will attend the University of Maine-Farmington, where he will study environmental science and race for the ski team. He is the son of Amy and John Varnerin of Stow.
